| Assault on the hill, while Dwarf scouts harass the advancing Orcs |
| The Greens prepare to charge the Orcs on the hill |
| The elites drive off the Orc defenders! |
| Even the use of replacements cannot stem the tide of battle |
| Light Goblin cavalry threaten the Dwarf left flank |
| Challenge offered and accepted! |
| Dolfor is easily defeated by the Orc leader. |
| The Orcs close in on the Dwarfs |
| Meanwhile the Dwarfs have taken the hilltop while the Ogres give up the fight seeking better targets on the plains. |
| One Blue unit is destroyed. |
| Then a second unit succumbs to the Orcs. The Goblin cavalry were aided by a surplus of mighty deeds to assist in their atack |
Meanwhile, the Dwarfs on the hill celebrate too long and fail to come back down to help their fellow warriors. The mounted Dwarf general, leaves his troops behind and armed with his vorpal blade charges headlong towards the Ogres.
By the time Grimir, the Dwarf General has been able to reach the Ogres, they have turned to face him. The Orc mage Ramzat lined up a magic missile to take out Grimir but failed to cast the spell! So it came down to a melee between Grimir and the Ogres, but first Grimir challenged and dispatched the attached Orc hero. By a narrow margin the Ogres were able to dispatch Grimir and thereby have more reputation at the end of turn six and thus won the game.
This was a much closer game than the first game, only two reputation separated the two armies. The final charge by Grimir was a last ditch attempt to gain enough reputation to win the game for the Dwarfs but it failed.
So, in both games the attacker was able to take the high ground and in both games the Orcs were victorious. It was a good test for the Roman Dwarf army list, built with replacements and javelins. As warriors with missiles, their combat dice were less than a regular warrior unit, but they were able to add half their missile strength to the first round of combat. They also had the opportunity to throw their javelin in the shooting phase.
The second game saw the replacement trait used a lot to keep the Dwarfs in combat even as casualties mounted up. Next time we use the Orcs I hope to add some heavy cavalry to the Orc force possibly as replacements for the light cavalry.
I am liking the game and it is inspiring me to base up/rebase my other forces that have been languishing on my shelfs for so many years. So, I have pulled out my Empire and Chaos troops to get working on them.
