My journey to the Back of Beyond has started...

Some new arrivals mark my decent into yet another genre/theater of war. It all started a few years back when I picked up a bag of figures at a bring and buy. It was a mix of Copplestone Bolshevik figures,  Russian sailors a machine gun or two and one artillery piece. These figures have been based and primed, but otherwise ignored on one of my miniature shelves. They sit beside some Pulp Figures Chinese troops that I picked up in anticipation of this madness gripping me.

Finally, a few weeks ago I ordered some more figures, this time from Caliver Press in the UK. While waiting for them to arrive I checked out a Canadian store, The Sentry Box, to see what they might have.  Well, they had a few items of interest, and at a phenomenal price. This week both orders arrived within a day of each other, 16 packages from western Canada, and 10 from the UK.

I guess I am really in it now!

From zero cavalry to 60 in one day and me without bases to mount them. SO that order goes out tomorrow, then the mounting and the painting can hopefully begin. Naturally I am already looking at what to order next, I am thinking some more artillery and maybe some more 'interesting' infantry units.

Another week, another new rule set

So, a new set of sci-fi space rules, the first for me in quite some time!

The rules look very interesting, any models can be used, and 2-4 players can play at one time. The rules at first glance seem quite easy to learn, and offer a lot of options. The big thing to me is the mission generation that eliminates the traditional game set up of two fleets meeting across a board, and instead makes use of jump points to drop ships into, and out of the fray. With specific missions games do not devolve into a slow grind, instead commanders must assess their needs and deploy the right assets to achieve their goal, but do not over spend on your force or you may well wind up spending more resorces than you will gain by winning the scenario.

Using two tables and having forces able to redeploy from one table to another is genius and again adds an extra level to the game.

More new arrivals this week

About 120 hero clix figures arrived Wednesday and I have removed the old base and set them up on some fender washers (I like the extra weight) Next will be to add scenic material to the bases, then a wash and touch ups to all of them. I do not plan to repaint all of them as some actually have not bad paint jobs. Some, of course, are quit horrendous and those will need some attention.

This time around I focused on gangs, picking up grunts for the Badoon, Skrulls, AIM, Hydra, Moloids, and some more Shield agents. Also picked up Thanos and the odd other big villain for the FF, Avengers etc

Recent arrivals

Fantastic Battles arrived a couple of weeks ago, while Infamy, Infamy just arrived this week. My initial reaction to both rule books is very positive, despite some minor misgivings. Fantastic battles has a couple of items that I would like to tweak, nothing too big, but range and movement kind of bug me.

For Infamy Infamy it is the fact that it is based on the general Fat Lardies rule system. However, while I have had challenges with it in other games, in Infamy Infamy it feels right to me. I have watched a few videos of the rules being explained, and a sample battle or two, and I must say I like the feel of the game. I particularly like the use of missions to make it more than just a stand up and pound on each other type of game.
