Undaunted Battle of Britain

So with two games under our I think it is fair to say, that this is a very fun, quick game! A simple deck building game creates challenges for the players when it comes to executing their plans. It also dictates how long a plane may stay in the air. If you decide not to draw extra plane cards into your hand(max of 3 cards per airplane) you may find your plane tumbling out of the sky all too quickly when they take damage. However sometimes you just get the perfect chance to go on the offensive and need to postpone adding plane cards to your hand in favour of quick action. Your choice.

The second game sees us at Dunkirk where the Germans are presented with many ship targets to fulfill their victory condition; they must sink 4 of the 6 ships. It was a tight game with the Germans eking out a victory despite being down to just  one stuka.

Undaunted Normandy by Osprey

So, we finally got around to playing this game and it is an excellent game, which is a good thing because I also own the North African version, the reinforcements set and Stalingrad set. I really should be more careful about buying expansions or new versions of a game before I have even played one game of the original. In this case it worked out!

Full proper reviews are available all over the web, but I will throw in my own two cents.

The base game is for two players, one controls the Germans, the other the Americans. The game has a scenario booklet that tells you what forces to assemble and how the battlefield will look. The game comes with 18 double sided terrain tiles that are placed on the table based on the instructions in the scenario book. The setup also tells you what troop to use, where to deploy them and what other markers should be placed on the board.

Just arrived in the post

It is kind of neat how Perry sends out their miniatures, it feels so old school!

These  figures are destined for some Silver Bayonet games. I went for a lot of figures from their Russian retreat section as they have a lot of unique poses, irregular clothing and a lot of charm. I also picked up a few figures for Napoleonic skirmish games be they Fist Full of Lead, Sharp Practice or some other set. So I have some more Spanish troops and some dismounted British dragoons.

So, far more figures than I would need for Silver Bayonets but then I often supply figures for players who, while they do not mind pushing figures around, have no interest in buying and painting miniatures.

I hope nobody bet against me...

So, just a quick update, the Spanish fleet is now mine too.

So this time last week I had a total of two, (2) Black Seas ships (they came with a WI issue). Now I have 55 ships spread out among three fleets (and two merchants) In a blink of an eye I suddenly confront:

  • 3 named 1st rates
  • 3 generic 1st rates
  • 9 named 3rd rates
  • 9 named Frigates
  • 20 generic brigs
  • 3 gunboat squadrons
  • 6 Schooners
  • 2 merchant ships

No rules yet, but they have been posted as of today. Also some scenery.

Madness, madness

Oh, and that means the US fleet is still there for someone to pick up, less expensive than the other fleets...hint hint.

Aprils project seems to be taking shape naval gazing!

With the water board in place, I guess I will be doing naval action. It was not my original thoughts, I really want to finish off the left overs from the AHPC, but what could go wrong if I put that off a bit. (APHC XIII?)

So I already have a number of naval games

  • Water battles makes up a large part of Dystopian Wars
  • Blood and Plunder is a pirate game
  • I have Sally4th steamer to build for Pulp Alley
  • Some Sarissa speed boats also for Pulp Alley
  • A riverboat steamer that will show up in All Quiet on the Martian Front

Heck even Godzilla came out of the ocean!

So that should be enough stuff right, I mean that 4 different games, 3 different scales, yeah I think that should do it...or is it?

4Ground Fort

As promised, a crappy video about the 4Ground fort (soon to be OOP?)

It does not have full flexibility to rearrange the fort, pretty well one layout, which is fine by me.

Recent arrivals

Fantastic Battles arrived a couple of weeks ago, while Infamy, Infamy just arrived this week. My initial reaction to both rule books is very positive, despite some minor misgivings. Fantastic battles has a couple of items that I would like to tweak, nothing too big, but range and movement kind of bug me.

For Infamy Infamy it is the fact that it is based on the general Fat Lardies rule system. However, while I have had challenges with it in other games, in Infamy Infamy it feels right to me. I have watched a few videos of the rules being explained, and a sample battle or two, and I must say I like the feel of the game. I particularly like the use of missions to make it more than just a stand up and pound on each other type of game.
