Latest board game night

Just finished (1 AM) another board game night. It was another somewhat impromptu night deciding what we would play when we got together. Tonight, er last night, saw us play two games, Village Attacks and Dark Gothic.

In Village Attacks we are the innocent monsters that are being harassed and attacked by angry, armed mobs. On the other hand, in Dark Gothic, a deck building game, we are monster hunters striving to defeat three main villains and an assortment of minions, oh and each of us wanting to get the most victory points.

This is the second time for each game, and I must say Dark Gothic certainly came out the winner. I had much more fun playing it, than Villagers Attacking. Villagers is a cooperative game, that tends to devolve into a static fight, where luck plays too big a part in the game. We were defending our home from angry mobs, yet unable to roll sufficient attacks turn after turn. It was a battle of attrition with doom appearing quite inevitable right from the start.

Dark Gothic on the other hand was much more dynamic in its game play. It is a semi co-operative game, in that all players are trying to defeat the big bad villains (3 in all, but fought one at a time) but at the same time they can play cards that will hamper their opponent. It has a very nice flavour to it, a sense of atmosphere and dynamic play. It was hard to calculate who was winning so one had to keep seeking victory points at every opportunity. I was unable to fight any of the 3 main villains, who were worth 8/9/9 victory points. All those victory points (26) went to my opponent. However when the last villain was defeated, and we tallied up the points he had won by a score of 60 to 50. That last villain determined the outcome. That's what made the game so good, even though I was unable to confront the main targets, I was able to change my tactics and acquire victory points another way.
