We used Tactica siege rules, and translated Orcs and Dwarfs into the system. All the siege towers were scratch built many, many years ago, as was the hoarding, and the mantlets. Some items weather the ravages of time better than others, but none escaped any damage. The walls are of course the old Warhammer mighty fortress walls. GW also supplied the defenders weapons, most of the attackers and defenders, and the classic cardboard buildings.
I chose Tactica over Warhammer siege, as I wanted a quick play game. It still allows siege weapons to pound the walls prior to an assault, it has rules for mines, and setting fire to things. The system is D6 driven, and you typically need to roll a 6 to hit. There are no role vs toughness, and saving throws, so combat in theory goes quite fast. The archery mechanic allows one to throw a number of dice based on the targets cover. So the Orcs shooting at the Dwarfs roll 1 die for every 3 Orcs, while the Dwarfs fire back rolling 1 die for every 2 Dwarfs shooting. Very simple very quick.
Set up took awhile as the lone Orc player had a lot of decisions to make and a fair number of troops to deploy. It was easier for the Dwarf play as he was able to see the Orc deployment and then deploy his smaller force to counter the Orcs plans.
We were able to play 6 turns over a 3 1/2 hours, which was not bad. Next time I play a siege game I will certainly ensure that the attackers are closer to the wall, perhaps only 18-24" (we started this 30" apart, for the most part) Certainly starting the besiegers at the extreme range of the defenders weapons makes more sense. To compensate the attackers they would be allowed up to 6 turns (rolled randomly or agreed upon by the players) of pre-bombardment, and mining rolls.
Some of the pictures from the game, more later
